25 Aug Atina + Drew: a Memphis Coptic Orthodox Wedding
Because Atina and Drew live out of town, but were planning a Memphis wedding, I talked with her over the phone a few times before the big day. She explained that they were having an Egyptian Coptic Orthodox wedding and asked if I was familiar with the ceremony. I wasn’t, so she explained it perfectly… “Have you ever seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Well, it’s like that, but Egyptian instead of Greek.”
I knew I loved Atina right away, just from our phone calls, but I wasn’t expecting how much I would love her even more in person! It’s rare to meet such a kind, genuine, trusting, and funny girl. Not to mention completely gorgeous. She completely left the photography in our hands on the big day, even though we had only met four days earlier. It wasn’t hard to see why Drew fell for her! By the end of the day, I not only loved them both, but their entire families! Atina has two of the best sisters and bridesmaids ever. I’m currently applying for honorary sister. I want in.
Atina’s veil was the star of the show! It was originally her mom’s, handmade by her dad for their own wedding day. I was completely obsessed with it!
Atina and Drew chose to see each other before the ceremony, and they had a very tender First Look! It gave us time for plenty of portraits.
Seriously! That veil!
I already commented on how awesome Atina’s sisters are, but their whole bridal party was the best! This group was so much fun!
I love bridal party photos!
Before the ceremony, Atina’s mom presented her with some very special family earrings. It was a touching moment.
The families did a fantastic job of decorating everything… from the fabric pennants over the door to the roses on the getaway car! No detail was left undone.
When the ceremony began, Atina’s father walked her halfway down the isle, where he turned her over to Drew. They then walked the rest of the way hand in hand. I loved that! And I loved that she got a little choked up as Drew escorted her to the altar.
Coptic. Orthodox. Ceremonies. Are. Awesome! There are robes. And crowns. And an awesome ring ceremony.
Did I mention that there are crowns??
The ceremony had everything a wedding should have – love, family, friends, laughter, and tears…
After the ceremony, we had time for a few more portraits in the gorgeous sunset light. Drew changed into a white evening jacket. LOVED that!
The first dance was very sweet…
I love this shot from Ed’s angle!
The father-daughter dance was upbeat and so much fun! At the end, their family and friends joined in!
Oh, did I forget to mention there were belly dancers? Yeah. There were BELLY DANCERS.
Everyone had such a great time, and the party lasted long into the night!
Atina and Drew, I am so grateful that you’ve come into our lives! It was a pleasure getting to know you, and an honor to capture your awesome day! I hate that you’re so far away. And I’m serious about that honorary sister adoption!
