Exploring Mexico Beach

Exploring Mexico Beach and Port Saint Joe

We’ve been back home in Memphis for nearly a week now, and I’m sorting through the last of my vacation photos. Our trip to the Florida beaches (Ft. Walton for a week, then on to Mexico Beach for another week) this year turned out to be the perfect vacation! We’ve never done a two-weeks-at-a-time vacation, but I don’t know that I can do them any other way now!

Usually, the most time we spend on vacation is a week. And a week sounds like a long time. But when you spend two of those days traveling (one day getting there, and one day getting back), you’ve already lost a good majority of relaxation time. Then you try to fit in all the activities that everyone wants to do in the 5 days you have left, and by the time you get home, you’re exhausted! Then you need a vacation to recover from your vacation.

So we decided to step out of our box and go for two weeks this time. I’m so very glad we did! Our first week was mostly dominated by dance activities, so we wanted a full week afterward to decompress. Since Mexico Beach is only a short 2-hour drive from Ft. Walton, we didn’t waste a whole other day traveling.

A full week for being lazy, lying on the sand, and playing in the waves? Yes please! I’ve never had a vacation that was so refreshing. Mexico Beach is a tiny town, and our condo was right across the street from the local grocery store. One of my favorite things about staying here was walking to the store every day for dinner supplies, then grilling or cooking dinner with a view of the beach. The entire bottom floor of our condo was an open seating area with a grill, and the sea breeze was amazing!

But our whole trip wasn’t all laziness. We did take a day for some shopping and exploring Mexico Beach and its surrounding areas. It turns out that the city of Mexico Beach had some really adorable shops, and we wanted to hop over to Port St. Joe, a close 10-minute drive to see what it had to offer as well.

We made lots of fun discoveries. I love how we all thought this abandoned theater with its ironic “open” sign was super cool!

I love local adorable shops!

Morgan and Jessie are inseparable these days.

But my favorite part of this shopping and exploring day was pulling over on the side of the road when I spotted a cool photographic bridge. After all, isn’t that what exploring is all about? I’m always, always down for spontaneous photos! Alex, however, was less than thrilled with the idea.

My favorite photo of the day (and maybe the whole trip) is this one. They wanted a “cool, fun bridge pic.” I think we managed it! And best of all, I love how each kid is totally being themselves in this exact moment, down to Alex’s famous pout. This one is getting printed!

Am I sad our vacation is over? Yes. But you know what? I was totally ready to be home when we finally got there. That’s something that doesn’t happen very often. It’s very rare for me to prefer home (or anywhere) over sand and water. But I was ready, and refreshed.

And that’s exactly what vacations are for.
