dancing on the beach.

We’ve spent a lot of time lately traveling. And that’s cool – we love traveling, especially to the beach. It’s what the summer is for: packing the family into the car, driving to the coast, eating out more often than not, and spending the evenings laughing until we cry. So that’s just what we did.

And somewhere in there, Jessie and her awesome dance studio managed to win the overall national championships in their division.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you probably already know that we spent the week of July 4th in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida for Jessie’s National dance competition. While we spent a good portion of the week at the convention center competing, we did manage to sneak in quite a lot of family fun time.

Except that it rained. The. Entire. Week.

And not just those summer showers that pass over quickly that Florida is famous for. We’re talking pouring, drenching, stormy, flood-the-streets rain. They even had to cancel the Fireworks show on the 4th. Not the best week for a beach vacation, but we had dancing to keep us busy, and a great view of the waves and wet sand from our balcony, even if we couldn’t get in the water.

We had planned an entire evening taking dance-themed photos on the beach, but the rain was trying real hard to keep us from doing that. So, on the last morning we were there, we had a 30-minute break in the rain before Jessie had to start that day of dancing. We ran down to the beach and started shooting in front of the dunes. We got about 15 minutes before the sky let loose and rain poured down on us. We ran for cover, stuffing our cameras inside our shirts to keep them dry, but ended up soaking wet ourselves.

It was worth it.

Natural dunes are my absolute favorite. And those clouds make for a stunning background!

One of my favorites. It still astounds me that my kid can do these kinds of moves!

I shared my lens with the others while we were at it. Morgan was spending some quality time with her grandparents and wasn’t able to make it before the rain. But we got Helen…

And Alex.

But I do always adore the outtakes! Seriously, those faces!

So yeah. We don’t let a little (or a lot!) of rain spoil our fun. It will always be a vacation to remember!

Here’s to sand dunes. And dramatic clouds. And running in the summer rain. Cheers!
