Temi and Michael's Memphis River Engagement

Temi + Michael: Promised. A Memphis River Engagement.

Michael was so certain that he wanted to marry Temi that he proposed three times. In one day.

Because Michael lives in Nigeria, Africa, and Temi lives state bound in Knoxville, he had a lot of opportunity to carefully plan his proposal. Michael and Temi had often talked about marriage, but she didn’t yet have the ring that made it official. On his next trip to the U.S., Michael took Temi for a scenic helicopter ride. His plan was to romantically propose in the air, with the world below stretched out beneath them. What he didn’t count on was the volume of the rotors. When he tried asking her to marry him over the earphone-clad communication system, Temi couldn’t quite make out his words.

Not willing to give up so easily, Michael took out his phone and texted the proposal instead. Temi agreed, thinking that without a ring, he was just teasing her again. When they landed, he surprised her by dropping to one knee and presenting the ring that he had concealed the whole day. Temi happily agreed again, and from that day forward, it was official.

Michael works for MTV in Africa, so he naturally thinks creatively. I spoke with him several times on the phone while he was still in Nigeria so that we could carefully plan their engagement shoot. I love it when a groom wants to get involved! Together, we came up with some ideas that suit them both so perfectly!

Temi is African too, so she wanted to be sure to include some bright colors. This art mural fit the bill perfectly!

Temi brought along a stack of some of her engineering school books to stand on, and I loved the idea! Michael jokingly said it was to represent the ladder she had to climb to become an engineer before he would agree to marry her. Michael has a wonderful sense of humor, and kept us laughing the whole time!

They are incredibly adorable, and a joy to watch together!

We took advantage of sunset near the river, where we finished up with more laughter and fun.

Michael had requested a creative “trick shot” (in his charming African accent), so I thought this fun double exposure would do the trick. I love how it turned out!

At the end of the night, Michael draped his jacket around Temi’s shoulders. We joked that he just wanted to prove that he was chivalrous, but we all knew that it was really because he truly loves and treasures Temi. We can’t wait for their wedding this fall!

Temi and Michael, thank you so much for hanging out with us for an evening. It was a pleasure finally meeting in person, and getting to know you both better. We had such a great time laughing and sharing your love story!

Here’s to a proposal that took three tries. And creative collaboration. And awesome senses of humor!

Cheers!
